''Try not to become a man of success, but rather try to become a man of value''
Values are at the centre of everything you think and do.
They represent your priorities and are the driving force behind who you are and what you stand for.
Your values are a result of all your experiences and influences throughout your lifetime, Including your upbringing, your education, your religious affiliations, friends and family, and more. They are what you believe to be of utmost importance in your life and are essential to making decisions predicted on your best interest.
YOUR INFLUENCE AS A PARENT
Parental Behaviours and actions strongly influence how children prioritise values in their own lives.
In a national survey conducted by researchers 80% of youth respondents said their parents valued achievement and happiness over caring for others. Yet parents reported that raising caring children was a top priority for them.
The disparity is likely because the parental messaging and actions are not aligned with their beliefs. Parents may not realise that celebrating achievement more then other values - such as caring for others, co operation, and kindness, may be sending a confusing message. To avoid such misunderstandings and parents will want to ensure that their actions and messaging are in consistent with their values.
Psychologists find children learn values from society and pressures observation and patterns. Once they get into teenage years they will evaluate the values they have gained and really consciously will choose their own.
THE BENEFITS OF HAVING A STRONG SENSE OF VALUES
Defining + having a strong sense of values provides a multitude of benefits.
Goal setting: following a life predicted on your values gives you direction in setting your goals. This enables you to set goals true to what is important to you, rather then what is important to others.
Better Decision Making: Your values gives you a foundation from which to all make all decisions. They ensure that your actions are in alignment with what you find important. Without a solid understanding of your values, it is easy to base decisions on circumstances and social pressures, instead of on what you value.
It enables happiness: When we are clear on our values and make choices in alignment with them, we promote happiness within. When we dont we can experience inner conflict. Which ultimately leads to discontent
It builds self confidence: Staying true to your values helps build self confidence. You feel surer of your choices the decisions you make you character and who you are. Further your behaviours are more consistent and authentic.
